EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's golf sophomore Laura Kueny became one step closer to qualifying for the 2008 U.S. Women's Open, after advancing through the local qualifying last week in Minnesota.

Kueny carded a four-over par 75 at Woodhill Country Club in Wayzata, Minn. on Tuesday, May 13 to tie for second in the field and become one of 12 at the location to move onto the sectional qualifying.

Kueny's sectional qualifying will take place on Monday, June 9 at the Skokie Country Club in Glencoe, Ill.

The Whitehall, Mich., native finished her sophomore campaign strong for MSU, as the top Spartan finisher at both the NCAA West Regional and the Big Ten Championship. Kueny tied for 17th at the regional and was fourth at the conference championship, earning her All-Championship honors. A First Team All-Big Ten selection, she is currently ranked No. 51 in the country by Golfweek/Sagarin and No. 54 by Golfstat. Kueny had five-top-four finishes in the team's 11 events this season, including winning the Mary Fossum Invitational to begin the fall.
